This first item may, in fact, be a repeat for this blog, but I thought I would cross-post it anyway.

Okay, it's time to talk about some of the dirty little secrets of medical school. The first of these little secrets is far-and-away the funniest and it is p
erpetrated by the students themselves. Its a little game called "Gunner Bingo." Certainly this not a game isolated to this fine institution, but it is usually not publicly known: At least, not known by the gunners. To protect the innocent, I will not reveal the sources of this information. As if there actually was anyone that was innocent.

Here is my understanding of the Gunner Bingo: during the first few weeks of school, a list of the students that ask questions during class is compiled. Then cards are made up with these names on it in a 5 x 5 grid…just like a bingo card. When the game is in play, you are supposed to mark your card as each student asks a question. When you get five in a row, you are supposed to ask a question and work the word "BINGO" into the question to announce that you have won. Something like, "So, is this right? You have a patient that ends up with problems swallowing due to a minor stroke, they inhale some of their gastric juices and then, BINGO, you've got a patient with aspiration pneumonia?"

I managed to learn of this game pretty early on, but I was not "allowed" to play because I was on the card. I can say this, either no one actually won (which I find difficult to believe) or, more likely, no one had the GUTS to actually announce they had won. What a bunch of wimps!

You see one of the official cards here! Obviously, the student in possession of this card did not enjoy Dr. Schlafer (who was one of my favorite lecturer). I still find it really funny who all is on this card!

For some reason, there is a problem with the blogger images...to get back to this page, you have to go to your Back-Button history and go back two places and I cannot seem to correct that at the moment...sorry.

PBL (Problem Based "Learning")

The video is almost worth the thousands of tears actually shed during these case!

The last line is the best..."True'dat-Jonie!"

The funniest part is I used to teach PBL in my former life. I wonder if my students found it as tedious as I did as a student. Oh? Did I just say something negative? Oops!
